The Happening
So the movie I picked was The Happening. For a brief summary plants have evolved for some reason and release these toxins into the air which messes with human neurotransmitters. Because of this humans start killing themselves for no apparent reason. Our main character's goal throughout the movie is to keep his wife and his friends daughter alive. He encounters many problems along the way but eventually survives. If i were to rate this movie i would probably give it about a B+. There are some things that i don't understand and i don't know if it's just me or if it just in general does not make sense. I don't understand the whole mood ring thing that the director comes back to three or four times. I don't see the relevance of it to the movie. Another thing that doesn't make sense to me is that the director brings the main character's marital problems into the movie. Now, i understand that it could give us an emotional connection to the main character but if that were the case then i don't like his approach of presenting that. His wife gets these phone calls from another man that she apparently had dinner with one time. Then his wife lets him know that she had dinner with another man and told him she was at work. He does get upset by this a bit but then he reveals this story of him flirting with a woman at the pharmacy. If it were the case that he was trying to give the audience an emotional attachment to the main character i think there were a lot better ways of doing that. This movie has a very interesting story line and some of the deaths in this movie are surprising and keep you wondering what will happen next. I really like the scene where our main character, his wife, his friends daughter, and two other teenage boys stop at a house to ask for food and rest. The people in this house are paranoid and will not allow them to rest. The people in the house shoot the two teenage boys. I believe this scene really gives you the shock of the whole situation. Up until this point i was thinking to myself "yeah, that would be pretty scary to have plants messing with your brain." After seeing this scene i really understood the world-wide panic that was going on. I also like the scene with the crazy old woman that almost regrettably gives them shelter and a meal for one night. She makes this statement, "the world don't care about me and i don't care about the world." After hearing what she said i made the realization that the world really doesn't care. What i mean is that mother nature could not care less about the human species and if mother nature really felt the need she could rid the planet of our race. So this movie had its strong points but it also had some confusing moments that could have been explained a little better.

I have never seen this movie so I dont know what happens really but I really like how you talked about at the end where its says that mother nature could care less abotu the human race and if she could rid of us she could.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the detail that you put into this. To make it even better, I would link it to the actual movie page so that people can see clips, images, or read other reviews about it. It shows that you really did your research on this film.
ReplyDeleteI haven't even heard of this movie. It sounds creepy, but in a good way. Mother nature really could get rid of all of us. That can be a scary thought.
